Alongside the 1996 facelift of the classic shape Impreza came the first two-door coupé version of the WRX, the WRX Type R. The new model was chosen by Prodrive for use in the World Rally Championship because it was lighter and stiffer than the saloon, although it was the same size externally.
It was essentially a two-door version of the WRX Type RA special edition, so it had only minimal sound insulation, a stronger close-ratio gearbox, water-spray nozzle to dampen the top of the intercooler and Driver’s Control Centre Differential (DCCD), which allows the centre differential locking adjusted. Around 10,000 Type R models were produced for the Japanese Domestic Market.
This 2000 year car was imported new from Cyprus by the current owner. It has now covered 55,632 miles, and has a full service history, all fully documented. Everything is original apart from the P1 alloys, stainless exhaust from the cat back, upgraded front disks (on standard four-pot calipers), steel braided hoses and clear side indicator lenses.
