The Final 5 Shortlist – Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR

9th August 2020

Doug Nye on the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR

Doug Nye, the world’s leading motor sport historian, explains the importance of the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR we know best as ‘722’, and reminds us that the Mille Miglia was by no means the only great race in which the car was driven to victory by Stirling Moss.

As a lifelong motor sport enthusiast and a great friend of the late Sir Stirling Moss, Doug is perfectly placed to give this insight into the way Stirling was able to dominate the 1955 Mille Miglia is 722, but also explain how Mercedes-Benz had developed the 300 SLR into a world-beater – and why its victories remain so important today.
